Right now they are OVER POWERED because:

pin point accurate
medium range
blast damage
low energy cost
relatively cheap
lightweight


Suggested fix : Give the flak cannon Low accuracy. so its useful for shooting down missiles en-mass, but flak-cannon fighters have less effectiveness.

easy fix

overpowered weapons reduce game enjoyment

It doesn't stop people putting 4-6 flak cannons on a ship and still landing direct hits.

Not to mention the Flak has to be accurate to be a good point defense, lower its accuracy and it can no longer fufil its job.

I recommend: Lower damage/splash damage.

as a missile approaches it's target the cone of inaccuracy would narrow.
Massed flak cannon would actually do a slightly better job with spread shots.

The problem now is that it isn't a flak cannon. It's an explosive round mid range high accurate rifle with decent range.
When placed 2 at a time with 4 thrusters you have an 88p dominator. It's very hard for any army to compete with this.

Lowering the accuracy opens up other options for fighter/drone class vessels.

Flak cannons are generally accurate enough for effective point defense/anti fighter.

I'd suggest just have enough damage for 1-2 shots to take down a missile, but still lower damage/splash damage so it's not quite as effective of a weapon than it should be for direct combat.

And I disagree with it doing better against missiles/regular point defense with spread shots. Missiles generally start to group together as they home in on a target. Spread shot would reduce concentrated firepower for point defense purposes.

if you watch flak cannons try to shoot down swarms of missiles you would see that most shots from groups of flak cannons miss.

What makes it OP is that it's pin point accurate fire from fighters and 88p vessels. My fix works and is easy to implement.

its a flak cannon, the whole point is that it explodes the air to hit missiles, and works well vs light vessels

currently it works well vs everything!

I have the exact same design as both a Terran flakmobile and a Sentinel bolterball. It's eight armor pieces, eight guns, and twelve L thrusters. It's a slightly tankier version of the Blitzball. I field these things along with a few other small designs in the hundreds during campaign. I died only once with this doctrine when some Laporien battleship picked my flagship to demo a ramming nuke attack upon.

o7 to that Laporien captain and Lapsapnow. My CPU hates me btw. :lol:

I do agree that flak cannons are strong, but flak weapons have historically been very strong. I dont think the damage should be reduced, but if the AoE was reduced so the guns deal mainly surface damage to most vessels rather then deep damage that would be more realistic. A smaller blast radius prevents the weapon from dealing too much damage to modules properly hidden behind armor parts.

Right now a single flak hit can damage modules hidden 1-2 blocks deep, a bit much.

What if the projectiles didnt detonate on impact, they detonated in proximity?
