Right now there is an arbitrary setting in the cvars.txt marked as kPhysicsDamping = 0.800. Lowering that number will reduce the "drift", but it also slows down the effectiveness of the thrusters. A better idea would to eliminate the kPhysicsDamping = #.###, and delegate the thrusters to provide the same function.

I made a mod called "Delta-v" that remove all dampening effect by setting kPhysicsDamping to 0.999 (setting it to 1 cause a strange bug where Spikey Plants stop using they thistle launcher...)

To make a short story, this affect everything in the game: your ship, asteroids, debris, missile, other ships... With this mod, you can achieve the effect you describe where you can drift as long as no force (from a collision, cannon recoil or thruster) act upon your momentum. A side effect of this is that there is no limit to the speed you can reach. Be it positive or negative depend on one's opinion...

Edit: There is a cap to the maximum speed you can reach. But, with this mod, you reach the cap quickly compared to the vanilla game.

For information, his mod is fun!

And the AI is surprisingly good when dealing with no drag (well, if the ship it's flying with is well designed...)

Here is the link: Delta-v on Steam Workshop

Note that you will need to opt-in the "beta" version of the game to have Steam Workshop mod support. That's under properties of Rassembly in your library under the "Betas" tab...
