I like the "drifting" you get with this game. Some people complain about the the inertia. What if opposing thrusters are used as inertial dampeners to gradually slow your speed, and it can be adjusted from: no damping at all to fairly quick stops via a slider. Thruster placement will have an effect on this of course. I don't think its ever been done in a game like this before.

I usually keep my ship under keyboard control, lets you drift and the like very well.

Yeah, but if you use the keyboard rotation you lose the ability to strafe using side thrusters. I grew up playing and mastering Asteroids so the drift is no big deal to me. But some do complain. Adjustable damping would allow those who like the drift and those who want less drift to be happy. I don't recall any game that has that. It might be a first.

Or not
You can use Q and W to strafe you know? (With English keyboard (A and E in France ^^))

That would not work since W is used for forward already.
I don't use a keyboard. I use an Nostromo Speedpad. Using that particular keyboard layout seems counter-intuitive.

I'm also one of those screwball "Southpaw" types with the mouse on the left of the kb. Pretty sure I'm out of that too. LOL!

Ok, it's a fail on my side XD
When you press r you change the current mode of travel, there is 3:
1) The ship look at the cursor
-w the ship move toward the cursor
-s the ship move back
-a and d to strafe

2) The ship don't care about the cursor
-w the ship move forward it's facing
-s the ship move backward it's facing
-a and d, the ship turn
-q and e, the ship strafe

3) The ship look at the cursor
-w the ship move toward the top of the screen
-s the ship move toward the bot of the screen
-a and d, the ship move toward a side of the screen

Edit: can be reconfigured in the options ^^

q and e let you strafe in keyboard only mode* and that speedpad looks great!

I think the whole thing would work. You can put the slider on the button assignment screen. Right now there is an arbitrary setting in the cvars.txt marked as kPhysicsDamping = 0.800. Lowering that number will reduce the "drift", but it also slows down the effectiveness of the thrusters. A better idea would to eliminate the kPhysicsDamping = #.###, and delegate the thrusters to provide the same function. The location of the thrusters will, of course, dictate how effective the damping will be. It has been done in the game Space Engineers, but only as an on/off toggle, and not as a variable slider. I think a function like this will cater to the various playing styles of different people. Well, that and I wont have to read any more complaints on the subject.
I like very little damping, but others may want a lot more.
